RMIT Gallery Art Collection Online

PROJECT OVERVIEW

RMIT Gallery is an Australian public art gallery located in Melbourne, Victoria. It is the main art gallery of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. RMIT Gallery required a public facing, searchable web application that connected to their data management system, focusing on a range of options for searching and exploring the extensive data and multimedia within their collection.

Design and implementation of the RMIT Gallery Art Collection online. A responsive website was required to assist the public discovery of items held in the institute's collection, inline with RMIT guidelines and styles.

the process

I was briefed to create a range of concept based on the brief provided by RMIT Gallery. The focus was for the public to easily access, search and explore the rich data held within their system. After becoming familiar with the technical structure and limitations of the project I was able to produce conceptual sketches and user flows to communicate multiple intuitive ways that this could be achieved.

  • Working closely with the roles within RMIT Gallery and the development team, I was able to concept test the wireframes with 8 users to enable me to tweak language and structure to best suit expectations and content.

  • Once the concept achieved approval I was able to focus on the user interface design, working closely with the development team to ensure what was being designed was realistic.

  • Once the user interface and visual design stage was complete I had a handover session the with development team with static prototype with annotation and assets.

  • A final round of usability testing was conducted with the staging site to ensure the intuitive experience RMIT desired was achieved and any required improvements were made before releasing the project live.

what I learnt from this project

This project was a great insight to working within technical limitations. I was able to improve my understanding of data management, apis and working with large sets of diverse data. Another important lesson I learnt from this project is that it is vital to have user testing and iterations to achieve intuitive and simple functionality.
