The Learning Space

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Learning Space is an ecosystem of educational resources that have been carefully researched and designed alongside teachers and students. Built with a phased approach, the most desired and valuable features implemented first, followed by rounds of testing and continuous improvement. So far subjects utilising this usable system are: Japanese, French, Indonesian, German, Maths and Physical Education. The resources utilise video, audio, image and text to create engaging question types. The aim of the Learning Space is to produce a suite of mastery resources to enhance the printed resources with accessibility as a high priority.

I was part of the team that uncovered the desire for a flexible, modular and reusable ecosystem for building and releasing the resources. We needed to consider how the content was to; 1) be created, 2) be ingested into the system and 3) be for the end use. The solution included planning and support documents for authors, an authoring tool for publishers and editors and also the live customer facing resources. All 3 solutions needed to have a consist and holistic approach. The output consisted of an interactive content spreadsheet and user guides for content, an intuitive admin panel with permission settings and the Learning Space digital resource links to quizzes, videos, games, speaking practice etc. to be embedded into lessons and homework by school, parents and teachers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

ux research and strategy / flow diagrams / wire framing / prototyping / user flows / testing / user interface design / all tech and user docs

the process

  • Initial briefing with publisher, product owner and other stakeholders to discuss the scope and requirements for the project.

  • Discovery of what currently exists, competitor analysis, stake holder discussions and creation of an initial research strategy for approval.

  • Exploration of the learning goals and journey of the student through desk research and feedback from teachers via 1on1 discussions and surveys. This uncovered what was already being done well and where the gaps existed for our product.

  • Once the plan had been approved, I started wire framing concepts for the types of quizzes and question types the teachers and stakeholders had prioritised. I also researched the value of these question types for the learners journey and how important is it to be able to flexibly scaffold.

  • Concept testing and iterations with teachers helped us enormously when it came to fine tuning each feature.

  • Prototyping the quizzes helped to uncover the content requirements, style guide and technical documentation, for example user stories for development phase.

  • Usability testing with a range of users to ensure we were addressing as many issues as possible when using the resources, this allowed us to ask what user expectations were and fine tune the product even further to best suit.

  • Hand over of assets and developer documentation was my sole responsibility for this project, it was vital that I worked closely with the external development team to successfully complete the project.

  • I was also the quality assurance tester for multiple browsers and devices, creating reports and tickets vis JIRA bug fixes and functionality issues to be correct.

what I learnt from this project

So much!!!

I learnt a lot about research strategy and planning, recruiting test participants, creating scripts and assets for test session, reposting on testing and presenting findings back to the team. This project utilised the skills that I had started to already develop when communicating with developers and technical team members. Effective QA testing and reporting was a skill I learnt a lot about during this project.
