Axiell Sapphire - Rapid data entry application

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The rapid digitisation app was originally designed for the Natural History Museum in London for use within the Botany department. They required rapid digitisation of objects (such as deteriorating taxonomic sheets) to make them available online for research and conservation purposes. Since launching the app a large number of institutions around the world have now installed and are using it. This was a very valuable project, savouring the details of millions of important objects before they fall to pieces.

This app was required to rapidly push data to existing databases via a mobile device. Volunteers of the museum use the mobile / tablet app to take photos of the object (initially taxonomic sheets) and select the area of information that will be entered, before submitting it to next stage. The following stage of the process is where the next volunteer identifies the highlighted area and completes the web form based on that information. The forms are able to be customised based on each project.

RESPONSIBILITIES

interviews / info architecture / flow diagrams / wire framing / prototyping / user flowing / testing / user interface design

the process

  • I worked alongside the project managers and development team to sketch details and processes about the the required solution.

  • Interviews with users and stakeholders were set up to gather the detail required to create accurate process and user flows.

  • I produced detailed process flow diagrams as well as wireframes and worked with the team to create multiple iterations to present to stakeholders and concept test with some clients that were interested in the product.

  • Concept testing was performed to ensure that the product we were planning to create was fulfilling the requirements of our clients.

  • I designed the user interface and created working prototypes with annotations and documentation for approval before development started.

  • I worked closely with back end and front end developers to create the final product from the assets and documentation I produced.

what I learnt from this project

Large museums and galleries have very complicated data management systems, this was a great opportunity for me to sketch a diagram and visualise how objects and their attached information are entered into the system and then rendered online for public access. It was interesting to discover the problem these large institutions were facing with their deteriorating artefacts.
